    We have 2 writing camps for upper level of elementary school students this Summer. You may attend one of them, or join both. This is the 1st out of 2 creative writing camps for Grade 3-5.

    Creative Writing: Making Stories Together for 3rd-5th Grade

    Make stories using all of your senses. This writing workshop emphasizes children's ideas. They will build, sketch, and cut and paste their ideas using unconventional creative materials; then find the words and writing conventions that support what they really want to say. Children will learn new techniques for getting inspired and bringing their ideas to paper. At the end of this week-long creative writing workshop, children will hand-make a bound book to bring home.

  • Week 2 (07/14-07/18)

    The camp is to make writing easy and enjoyable for children in grades K-2. The camp involves incorporating activities that are engaging, age-appropriate, and focused on building foundational writing skills. 

    Here are a few example strategies we employ at our camp to actively involve children in writing:
    • Use Fun Prompts: Provide interesting prompts that stimulate imagination and creativity. For example, "If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to..." or "My favorite animal is..."
    • Start Small: Begin with simple writing tasks such as writing a sentence from simple to descriptive or a short paragrap. Gradually increase the complexity as they become more confident.
    • Provide Positive Feedback: Encourage children's efforts and celebrate their progress. Offer specific praise for their ideas, efforts, and improvements in writing.
    • Make it Fun: Turn writing into a game by playing writing-related activities like word bingo, storytelling games, or writing scavenger hunts.
    • Read Aloud: Read stories and books aloud to children to expose them to different writing styles, vocabulary, and sentence structures. This can inspire their own writing.
    • Offer Choices: Allow children to choose their writing topics or formats. Giving them autonomy increases motivation and engagement.

    By incorporating these strategies, we can help make writing enjoyable and easy for children in grades K-2, laying a strong foundation for their literacy development.

    Creative Writing: Making Stories Together For Grade K-3rd grade

    Make stories using all of your senses. This writing workshop emphasizes children's ideas. They will build, sketch, and cut and paste their ideas using unconventional creative materials; then find the words and writing conventions that support what they really want to say. Children will learn new techniques for getting inspired and bringing their ideas to paper. At the end of this week-long creative writing workshop, children will hand-make a bound book to bring home.

  • 07/28 to 08/01  5 half day Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:00pm $250/camp Location: 16100 NW Cornell Road Suite 210 Room 1

    Literary reading skills are above basic reading skills (outline meaning) and key reading skills (summary scanning)  to the point where we are grasping complex texts in all their complexity during reading. It is reading between lines in order to discover levels of meaning and develop complex interpretations.

    In this class, students will:

    (1) Review Basic Reading (imagining, responding, skimming)

    (2) Learn Reflective Reading (selecting, scanning, tracking)

    (3) Learn Analytical Reading (Interpreting, analyzing)

    (4) Write a critical analysis style essay 

    (5) Build up vocabulary throughout reading

    (6) Form up their unique critical essay writing style with correct logical structure and grammar.


    In this one week camp, the instructor will lead students to read at least one book, plus shorter pieces or chapters from books in a variety of genres.  

    For essay writing, the first step of critical writing is to take notes on evidence, document quotes and paraphrases while reading. The purpose of  critical analysis is not merely to inform, but also to evaluate the worth, utility, excellence, distinction, truth, validity, beauty, or goodness of something from the books that students are reading. We will instruct students to write those notes down on a notebook.

    The second step of critical writing is to design a clear logical structure of an essay. Students need to design/plan their essay with clear logical flow before start writing critical essay.

    During the revising process, we will check the logical structure, information, interpretation, evaluation of the text, and eliminate grammar errors.

    This class is for students who are going to enter the 9/10 th grade in the coming Fall term. The class will introduce Essay writing skills they will learn in high schools and get them ready for the new school year.

    This course is the step towards to the high school essay. You will be guided through the writing process, learning the essential components of the American high school essay. Topics include the various types of essays, the structure, and the development of paragraphs, topic sentences, thesis statements, supporting examples, grammar for academic writing, and vocabulary choices.

    By the end of this course, students will be more ready for their high school English class. Students may continue to improve and deep their Essay writing skills by entering to Essay Writing IA class in the coming Fall term at Sunshine.

    This class is for high school students who wants to improve and refine their Essay skills in Summer. The class will introduce and practice Essay writing skills required by high school, especially practice for the timed Essay so that students will be more successful in their high school English classes.

    This course is the step towards to the high school Honor English and AP English essay. You will be guided through the writing process, learning the essential components of the American high school essay.     This class is a refined skill-based guided writing level 3 class that is taught in a different way: Strength-Focused By Jennifer Rose.

    Writing Level 3 focuses on writing three related paragraphs on one topic.

    We will be building writing skills and grammar systematically for students in grades 3 and 4. Most of the skills are drawn from the higher level of the grade spread, therefore this class is most appropriate for advanced grade 3 students and on-level grade 4 students. Each of our levels has two years worth of skill content. A student can take this level for two years without repeating content! When your student is ready to develop multiple organizational structures, they will move on to Level 4.

    Our "skill-based" program helps children focus on specific writing skills in each class, so students gain mastery skill by skill. They become confident, competent writers. Each term we practice many genres of writing. Each genre builds different skills such as building attention to word choice with poetry and attention to descriptive details with science writing. 

    Meanwhile "guided" writing is highly supported, and enables students to produce complete writing that is well-structured.

    For example, in Level 3, instead of asking a child to write about themselves, a guided writing assignment could provide the following prompts: 1. What is something you like to do? Explain what you like about it or how you do it. 2. What are some important things to know about you? [Choose at least 3 details, such as name, age, family members, school, favorite things]  3. What experiences in your past have been important to you? 4. Complete the sentence: I am the kind of person who _______. 5. What does it feel like to be you? 6. Now write your paragraphs in a good order. 

    A child who follows these prompts learns to include explanations, make generalizations, and order paragraphs thoughtfully. They learn specific ending strategies, such as closing with feelings.

    Our "skill-based" program helps children focus on specific writing skills in each class, so students gain mastery skill by skill. They become confident, competent writers. Each term we practice many genres of writing. Each genre builds different skills such as building attention to word choice with poetry and attention to descriptive details with science writing. 

    Meanwhile "guided" writing is highly supported, and enables students to produce complete writing that is well-structured.

Write two synonyms for each adjective, then circle the best descriptive word. 2. Give evidence (reasons or examples) to support each of the adjectives you chose. 3.     This course offers a critical-creative reading and annotating path to good composing practices at upper secondary and tertiary stages of learning. It aims to support your development of rhetorical strategies, literary analysis and critical composing practices.

    You will learn varying kinds of critical thinking needed to make choices – choices of creative purpose and the diction, detail, imagery, and syntax to fulfill it. You will learn the questions to ask to develop a research question and a tenable thesis statement. You will be given sources to support your learning to summarize, quote, cite and reference properly.  You will read different types of critical essays that offer various types of claims and well-supported arguments, all to support your understanding of how you may shape your essay.  You will increase your vocabulary, understanding of logical, ethical and emotional fallacies to avoid and boost confidence in your capacity for writing various types of essays and critical tasks.

    Though the focus of the class will be on composing various types of essays required by AP and IB Diploma Programs, several of those types pertain to SAT essay writing, such as the AP rhetorical analysis essay and IB literary commentary. Preparation for those, including annotating text and various pre-writing approaches can support SAT test takers to prepare for writing and essay well.

    Each Essay Level and Grammar has two years worth of skill content. A student can take this level for two years without repeating content!
