National NASA STEM Competition the Techrise Student Challenge

NASA offers challenge projects for middle and high school students and also offers internships for high school students. The NASA Techrise Challenge project is to offer 6th to 12th-grade students being challenged to design, build, and launch experiments on a high-altitude balloon flight and rocket-powered lander.

To promote students to explore more in science, engineering, and technology, the WVA school set up the NASA Techrise Challenge team with 5 WVA 8th-grade students in 2023.

WVA Techrise Challenge Team was one of 60 teams selected as winners in the national NASA STEM Competition, specifically the Techrise Student Challenge. Kudos to the WVA eighth graders Joseph Liang, Roushil Satta, Anika Malyavanatham, John Kong, Keshav Karumbunathan (from left to right) and their teacher Mr. Dupuis! Best of luck to them as they proceed to the next stage. You can check out the coverage on KATU2 TV by clicking here.

Building on last year's adventure and initial success with the NASA project, Sunshine and the WVA faculty team believe that this is an excellent direction to explore further. This endeavor can inspire more young students to delve into various STEM fields, motivating them to expand and deepen their STEM knowledge and scientific research experience. We believe this is invaluable for middle and high school students, helping them discover their passions and shine as they progress toward college.

Science Bowl

The National Science Bowl (NSB) is a nationwide academic competition for middle and high school students that tests their knowledge of science and math. The Department of Energy (DOE) created the NSB in 1991 to encourage students to pursue careers in these fields. It's one of the largest science competitions in the country, involving more than 13,000 students nationwide. The NSB features teams of four students, one alternate, and a coach. Students compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to answer questions and solve technical problems in a wide range of science topics, including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
